Manitowoc Foodservice (NYSE: MFS) has announced that Gary Dykstra, VP Sales Buying Groups, will retire from his role of leading the company’s business with the USA Buying Groups at the end of this year. He will continue to serve as a consultant to the business. Chris Karssiens has been appointed to SVP Sales USA Buying Groups and will be replacing Dykstra in this role. Frymaster’s FilterQuick® fryers with the integrated Oil Quality Sensor (OQS) are the first fryers in the world to monitor the health of the oil and indicate with precision when frying oil needs to be discarded. In recent years, new technologies like automatic filtration, automatic top off, oil conserving frypots and cool mode controllers have promised to extend oil life. The problem is that operators need an accurate, consistent and objective way of determining when to replace the oil. Using the oil for too long will damage food quality, while disposing of oil too soon will result in increased expense. Common subjective oil quality assessments like oil color, food color or days in use require too much guess work and minimize the impact of these oil life extending technologies.

The Tampa Bay area recently landed the corporate headquarters of Manitowoc Foodservices, an international commercial kitchen equipment manufacturer that spun off from its Wisconsin-based parent and went public on March 4.

The Trinity-based company, led by new CEO Hubertus Muehlhauser, generated $1.5 billion in revenue last year, placing it among the top 10 Tampa Bay area public companies in sales.

Before taking over at Manitowoc in August, the German-born Muehlhauser spent 12 years at consulting firm Arthur D. Little, where he analyzed the food chain from farm to consumer. After that, he oversaw European and Asian operations for Agco Corporation, an agricultural equipment manufacturer.

Muehlhauser, 46, chatted with the Tampa Bay Times about the Tampa Bay area and his vision for the company in Florida. Questions and answers have been edited for clarity and brevity.
